Here we go with episode two of the second season of the Movie Brewer Podcast. Our film today is Locked Down, directed by Doug Liman, an honest look at what life was like during the 2020 lock down with some grand larceny thrown in for fun.

Our beer to match is Hindsight 2020, a tropical IPA from Lord Hobo Brewing. A light, easy to drink IPA that will fool you with it's 6% ABV. But hey we all needed to up our ABV's this past year didn't we.

We're Back!

Welcome to season 2 of The Movie Brewer Podcast. We're starting this season off with 12 Monkeys. Directed by Terry Gilliam in 1995 and loosely based off the 1962 French Film La Jetée 12 Monkeys is a whirlwind of time travel and psychosis. With the impending doom of humanity from a deadly virus James Cole is sent back in time to try and find the mysterious Army of the Twelve Monkeys. Giving us a film that at first glance may seem straight forward, but there is more going on here than you might thing.

Our beer to pair is Golden Monkey from Victory Brewing. A hard 9.5abv Belgian Tripel Ale with some fruity notes you might not expect from a tripel, and all the alcohol burn you do expect.

A movie that takes its absurdity very seriously, John Woo’s Face/Off is packed to the brim with huge set pieces, crazy situations, and Nicolas Cage and John Travolta at their 90’s peak. Woo brilliantly balances a high wire act of over the top performances, and shockingly bizarre plot lines to somehow deliver a gripping action movie that demands your attention from the very beginning, and never lets it go.

Our beer to match is The Perfect Disguise by Dogfishhead Brewing. A double IPA that smells and tastes like one might expect a Kölsch to smell and taste. It’s subtle and malt forward, leaving a nice feel in your mouth after a long sip. Easy to drink. So much so that you’ll need to keep reminding yourself of its 8% ABV.

Our movie this week is Baby Driver. A musical that can’t be considered a musical, Baby Driver is Edgar Wright on the top of his game. With a story that’s been brewing in his head since the mid-nineties, Wright gives us a technical triumph full of unique and engaging characters. You can’t help but engage with Baby and his perfect song for every occasion, and will find yourself whistling the soundtrack for days after.

The beer to pair is Wheels Gose Round A very raspberry forward gose that sips light and easy, Wheels Gose ‘Round is a delicate sour that pours pink with a small head and a potent aroma. It drinks with a biting carbonation, but has a subtle sourness and a quiet saltiness that a lot of gose’s miss. Overall a great gose with a great cause behind it.

This weeks film is Almost Famous. In one of the great homages to rock and roll, Cameron Crowe’s love letter to music offers an authenticity in performance and atmosphere that makes a fitting tribute to an era that is so rarely portrayed with love. As you watch the Stillwater find its way through the industry, and you watch William Miller find his way through life by watching them, it’s hard to believe that this wasn’t an actual band that existed in the 1970’s. Crowe’s experience brings the film to a level that would be unattainable by another director.

Our companion beer is Exhibit A’s Demo Tape: West Coast Style DDH Double IPA. A lovely hop forward IPA that highlights the hops without letting them become too complex or overwhelming. A soothing amber color with just a little bit of head, this beer offers a lovely taste and mouth feel that doesn’t give away it’s ABV level, and leaves you wanting a B-Side to this Demo.

Today's film is the classic comedy Caddyshack. One of the greatest comedies of all time, it unites powerhouse comedians Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray in a screwball comedy with some of the most quotable films of all time.

Our beer to match is Total Conciousness. Part of the Lovejoy Wharf series at Night Shift Brewing. Simultaneously fruity and bitter, but a solid balance between the two, this beer drinks light and easy. Something you can truly hope you will receive on your death bed.

This week's film is Denis Villenueve’s Arrival. A film that is simultaneously emotional and scientific. The whole film exists in this state of dueling mentalities, but Amy Adams' stoic and heartfelt performance grounds us in the story of a loving mother, even as things grow more and more unstable. A science fiction film for people who don’t usually like science fiction, there is an eerie semblance of reality in a world that is far beyond the normal.

Our beer to match is Orbital Elevator. A delcious subtle double IPA with a light pour, a potent aroma, and a sharp, but easy to drink bite to it. One of the best Double IPA’s I’ve had in a long time.

This weeks film is 2018's A Quiet Place. Directed by and starring John Krasinski. A Quiet Place is one of those rare horror films that manages to sustain it’s uncomfortable atmosphere and threat of impending doom, and still make you care about it’s characters. The connection Krasinski is able to forge between the family and the audience is impressive, especially considering the near complete lack of dialogue. I didn’t dare exhale, lest the monsters should descend on the family.

We’re pairing it with Tread Lightly Ale, a very lite crisp ale with delicate hints of citrus. Pours crystal clear with about a two finger head. Aroma is subtle, taste is subdued. I am ill experienced with “crafted to reduce gluten” beers, and I assume flavor is reflective of that. Overall light and sippable. Would probably enjoy it while hiking.

This week's movie is 1995’s Waterworld. Waterworld is a massive epic film that is outdone only by its reputation. Constant production issues and script rewrites give us a film that mostly holds itself together, but feels like the servant of two masters and gives the impression of a fair amount left on the cutting room floor. Overall, Waterworld holds its own place in cinema history, even if that place isn’t exactly what the filmmakers had hoped for.

The beer we pair with this weird and slightly gilly movie is Singlecut’s Weird and Gilly, a well balanced juicy IPA that smells almost exactly like it tastes. It pours a light hazy yellow, with a lacy collar and an aroma that fills whatever room it’s opened in. At 6.6% ABV it has a bit of a kick to it, but maintains an easy sip, and goes down smooth.

Today we’re breaking down In Bruges. A triumph of a script brings us well rounded, against type performances from Colin Ferrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Ralph Finnes. We’re presented with characters that by all accounts we shouldn’t like, but nonetheless connect with on a deep level as they struggle with their internal and external demons. All while trapped in the picturesque but unexciting city of Bruges...in Belgium.

Our beer is…also In Bruges, a well balanced Tripel from Lamplighter Brewery, In Bruges gives you a nice sip and feel without being too overpowering or too fruity. It pours a nice light amber, with a very thin head, keeps its taste and body through the whole can, and makes you steady yourself for just a moment when you stand to go get another.

Today we’re breaking down Dolemite Is My Name (2019). Eddie Murphy returns to form as real life legend Rudy Ray Moore. You can’t help but be engaged as Moore tries his damedest to get his mother fucking movie on a mother fucking movie screen. Murphy is electric in a role that you can tell is dear to his heart, and is supported by the who’s who of hollywood’s comedy talent.

Director Craig Brewer brings us into the ludicrous over the top world of Dolemite, while still keeping us grounded in a heartfelt and passionate story that makes you believe in Rudy Ray Moore, even when no one else will.

Our beer to match it is Toast Craft Lager, American Lager made from leftover bread. It pours a deep amber with a lacey head that packs a punch of flavor if you dive into it too quickly. Overall the aroma is subtle, and the taste has mild hints of hops, but overall it’s just a nice easy lager to idly enjoy.

Our film this week is The Iron Giant. One of the classic animated films of a generation, it tells the heartwarming story of an innocent boy who finds a mysterious robot, and tries to lead it down a path of enlightened self understanding in a world on edge. With characters both funny and relatable, Brad Bird delivers a story that anyone could find themselves lost in.

Our beer is Save the Robots, by Radiant Pig Craft Beers. A well balanced IPA that drinks light but maintains a complex taste. A golden beet with a strong fruity aroma that hints at the slight citrus that the taste delivers. All and all a solid beer for man or machine.

Today we’re talking about Thelma & Louise. A timeless classic with wildly rich complex characters that you just can’t help but relate with. Watching Thelma and Louise struggle to find their way through impossible circumstances and end up better for it leaves you with an inspired ‘anything is possible’ feeling that you’ll carry around for days.

Today’s beer is Barn Beer, by Plan Bee Fram Brewing. Barn Beer is a wonderfully balanced wild american ale. Pours a light pale yellow with a nice sweet aroma. Sour, but not overwhelmingly so, with a pleasant flavor and some sweet notes to it. Good on a nice spring day, but best when enjoyed on Plan Bee farm itself.

Today we’re looking at my favorite holiday movie: Jingle All the Way. A movie that has somehow, against all odds, become a mainstay of modern christmas movies. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Howard Langston, workaholic father who promised a Turbo Man action figure to his son, and proceeded to completely forget about it. We follow the adventures of him and fellow father Myron (played by Sinbad) as they try to make their sons dreams come true. Propped up by its relatable premise, this film is able to make it into the “good movie” column by the skin of its teeth. The films balance between sentimental and slapstick can be hard to handle, but ultimately it finds a way to deliver the warm fuzzies we all want from a Christmas Movie.

Our beer of the episode is The Mad Elf, a complex but smooth Belgian ale that you don’t realize is 11% ABV until your halfway through it. The Mad Elf pours a festive deep red with just a little bit of head, and gives a well balanced cherry based flavor with hints of all kinds of different things. A solid holiday beer in moderation, or in excess, depending on how your relatives are behaving.

The week we’re talking about Rampage. In a film that’s pretty much exactly what you think it is, The Rock must save his albino gorilla buddy George before he and two other giant monsters destroy Chicago.

The best thing that Rampage has going for it is The Rock, which is not an unsubstantial mark in the plus column. While the overall story and characters are predictable and somewhat forgettable, The Rock’s charisma is enough to sell the relationship between him and the mutated gorilla that’s definitely NOT King Kong. We’re in it enough to make this movie a fun, wild ride that we know we don’t have to take too seriously.

Our beer is Harambe’s Ghost. Yes, I’m drinking Harambe’s Ghost. From Cheeky Monkey Brewing, this double IPA gives a subtle aroma that offers a tease of the taste to come. An overall taste that is complex, with a touch of alcohol, that lingers after the first sip. Drinks a bit like an English ale, though it is questionable how much a gorilla would enjoy it.

This week we’re looking at Mars Attacks! the cult classic b-movie that boasts a star studded cast that only Tim Burton could assemble. The world looks on in horror as aliens from Mars wreak havoc on Earth. From Washington to Vegas, everyone’s just trying to survive.

An iconic film full of iconic imagery destined for pop culture. Overall some underutilized performances and the feel of an over-edited script make it a little hard to digest from an academic point of view, but Mars Attacks! is an endless good time that almost has you rooting for the martians.

And our beer to match is Ransack the Universe, by Collective Arts Brewing. An aromatic IPA that hits softly and lingers on your tastebuds. A hazy amber pour with just a bit of collar, this beer has a dry taste that delivers on the fruity promise made by it’s aroma. The galaxy hops shine against the light malt. Hints of citrus and fruit round out a delightful full bodied beer.

This episodes beer is Fenway Froth from New City Brewery in Easthampton, MA. A single malt and single hop (S.M.a.S.H) IPA. A crisp beer that’s tasty but not overpowering. The combination of Golden Promise malt and Ekuanot hops deliver a relaxed session IPA that’s easy to sip all day long. Perfect for those long afternoons at the game.

And of course today's movie is Moneyball (2011). In this film Brad Pitt delivers a nuanced but complex performance as Billy Beane, General manager of the Oakland A’s, one of the poorest teams in baseball. With the assistance of Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) they put together an island of misfit players based on sabermetrics, bucking the rules and advice of traditional baseball.

Moneyball delivers a heartfelt, romantic take on the traditional baseball story, creating characters that you can’t help but root for and making you cheer along with the fans in the stands.
